Days off

With my day off today I decided to go see the movie Hancock. All the reviews said it was not that great. They said it was darker than they expected and the story began to unravel half way through and didn't make sense. After seeing it I can say smart people get it.

The whole movie is not about Will Smith's superhero character sobering up and becoming a better hero, that is only a small portion of it.

The first 30 minutes are of Hancock (Will Smith) an out-of-control drunk trying to do good. In one scene he tries to save a car from being hit by a train and causes a lot of damage, even though he does save the car. The witnesses are listing everything he did wrong and how he could have done them better, then the best line of the movie comes out:
Old lady: "And he smells like alcohol."
Hancock: "That's because I've been drinking, bitch."

Then the next 30 minutes are of him working with Jason Bateman and becoming sober and a better hero. The last 40 minutes are when I think the critics got lost (smart people still get it). After being loved by all Hancock wonders why he is doomed to be alone and wonders if being a mortal would be better, he also wonders about his origins since he cannot remember them. It all culminates with one last twist and has a decent ending.

As someone who has to deal with his own super powers on a daily basis I enjoyed it. As someone who enjoys watch a drunk stumble around swearing at children, I also enjoyed it. And Will Smith is once again a good actor in a movie he is in.
